Okay, let's talk about what intrusive thoughts actually mean. So many moms messaged me saying like, the thoughts feel so real, what if they mean something? But here's what intrusive thoughts actually mean. They are a glitch in the brain's alarm system. They are not a reflection of your values, your desires, or your intentions. OCD loves to target what you love most. That's why it feels so disturbing and so distressing. If you are someone who values your kid's safety, then your OCD is probably gonna target your kid's safety. Having a thought is not the same as wanting something, planning something, or being capable of doing something. Thoughts are just thoughts. Thoughts are not facts. Thoughts are not predictions. Thoughts are just thoughts. Postpartum OCD is truly terrifying because it targets what you love most, but it's also very treatable. You don't necessarily need more reassurance because that keeps you in the loop. What you need is support that teaches your brain that you are safe.
