Let's talk about what postpartum depression actually looks like in my office because I think a lot of people get this wrong. A lot of people think that postpartum depression looks like teariness, maybe haven't showered, maybe isn't eating, but that's not always the case. Some moms look super put together, perfect makeup, the perfect outfit, clean house, baby on schedule. Every appointment is made. Every task is handled, but inside they're falling apart. So postpartum depression and anxiety don't just always show up as like not functioning. For a lot of high achieving women, it shows up as over functioning. They keep moving, keep organizing, keep doing because slowing down feels scarier. If you stop, all the things that you've been pushing down might actually catch up. Both versions are real. I see both versions. Both versions deserve help and neither one means that you're failing. It means that we're doing something really hard in a society that does not support us.
