Postpartum depression doesn’t always look like sadness

Okay, let's talk about what postpartum depression actually looks like in my office in 2025. So three common things I hear are not being able to sleep when you have the opportunity to sleep. So obviously in postpartum, like none of us are sleeping, but when you have the opportunity to sleep, are you able to fall asleep or are you checking that monitor? Are you waking up in a panic that babies stopped breathing and then you're unable to go back to sleep? That is a pink flag. Also, I would say rage. A lot of my clients report getting really irritated at everything partner does, and that's not their norm. They're irritated about things that normally wouldn't be irritating to them and experiencing a lot of rage about it that I hear about in my office a lot. And then number three, I would say numbness, kind of an emotional numbness and overwhelm. So sometimes I might say, tell me what you've been feeling. And my client might say, I feel nothing. I feel empty. I feel overwhelmed. I feel numb. Um, that what that is, is nervous system burnout, but that is what my clients are reporting. So it's not necessarily like a teariness, um, a blue kind of depressed state. It can look kind of different than what that screener form makes you think of like the doctor screening you for postpartum depression. So, but regardless, if you're experiencing any of those, these things, it, you are not broken. This is super common and there is support available to help you start feeling like yourself again.
